Welcome to Biofuels East

The global biofuels industry in expanding and diversifying in response to the need to increase energy security and reduce greenhouse gases emissions.

The East of England capabilities in academic research, automotive R&D, agriculture and advanced engineering can make a significant contribution to the development of low carbon biofuels.

Biofuels East is a virtual Advanced Biofuels Hub aimed at fostering collaboration between academia and industry in biofuels advancement.

Biofuels East:

  • Offers intelligence on regional developments and                                        sources of funding for collaborative projects;
  • Pro-actively encourages opportunities for partnerships and               supports the development of joint research bids.

Whilst primary aimed at placing the East of England at the forefront of advanced biofuels developments, the hub welcomes stakeholders from other UK regions and countries.

Biofuels East is a membership organisation. Full and free access to the benefits of the hub is for members only. If you are working on advanced biofuels in academia or industry, register your interest in becoming a member of Biofuels East today.

WHO SHOULD APPLY TO JOIN THE HUB?

Biofuels East is aimed at scientists and engineers working on the development of advanced biofuels in academia or industry. Sociologists and economists assessing the impacts of biofuels are also welcome. Register your interest in becoming a member here.

The Commission decided today to encourage industry, governments and NGOs to set up certification schemes for all types of biofuels, including those imported into the EU. It laid down what the schemes must do to be recognised by the Commission. This will help implement the EU's requirements that biofuels must deliver substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and should not come from forests, wetlands and nature protection areas. The rules for certification schemes are part of a set of guidelines explaining how the Renewable Energy Directive, coming into effect in December 2010, should be implemented.
